ABOUT TEMPLES, PAGODAS and TERRACOTA SOLDIERS
After the scientific meeting in Shanghai and Nanjing, we had the opportunity to visit the prosperous city of Xian. This visit gave us the opportunity to admire what the Chinese people consider the eight wonder of the world: the terracotta soldiers (below). A magnificent army made of fired clay during the Emperor Quin's Dynasty. More than seven thousand life-size figures were moulded and graved (buried several feet deep). The warriors are located in perfect formation for fighting, with uniforms, weapons and combat carriages. The city has also other valuable monuments: the Wild Goose Pagoda from the Tang period (VI century AD) and the thermal water lake, where the Emperor's concubines took their bathes. Both are surrounded by beautiful gardens and intricate details decorate the Pavilions. From Xian we moved to Beijing where we visited Tianamen Square, the Summer Palace, the Forbidden City and of course the Great Wall (below). Another Beijing highlight was the College of Veterinary Medicine. The anatomical teaching aids were magnificent. In Chengde we visited the Emperor's summer palace and a Lamasery, Buddhist Temple. Our China tour ended in Beijing with most looking for last minute shopping bargains and finally with a wonderful Roast Duck Banquet.
We were all impressed by the rapid sociocultural development of the cities we visited , especially Shanghai and Beijing. They boast luxurious, modern hotels and buildings , which soar to the sky everywhere. The Chinese are working hard to improve their tourism facilities day by day.
We wish to thank all of our Chinese hosts who helped along the tour route, especially Fong who was with us for the entire tour. The kindness and hospitality of the Chinese people was shown to us as we travelled through the idyllic landscape splashed with ethnic minorities who offer their culture, beautiful clothes, music and dances.
