INTRODUCTION

In memory of our colleague and friend Prof. Dr. Andreas Weiglein from the Department of Macroscopic and Clinical Anatomy at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, who passed away unexpectedly on the 7th February 2020 in Graz.

Andreas was a significant figure in the history of the International Society for Plastination. He spent a lot of time and effort to boost our Society, as he was the ISP President from 1997 to 2003, and Honored Member (Beijing 2012).

During this time, he made a great effort to improve the activities organized by the ISP. Just as a summary, he always tried to promote the highest scientific and academic quality at the international conferences of the ISP; looked after achieving the best possible standards in the papers published in the Plastination Journal; generously took care of all the needs that arose in the Society; participated in numerous training courses in plastination techniques, helping to set up new plastination laboratories in numerous countries around the world; and also published numerous articles on plastination, mainly related to specific techniques for the central nervous system, such as P35 and P40.

I have very good memories of him, especially during the ISP International Conference in Murcia (Fig 1). Not only during the scientific program (Fig. 2a,b) but also during the social program in the downtown University Campus (Fig. 3), during the gala dinner (Fig. 4), or during the post-conference trip to visit the Alhambra palace in Granada and the Science Museum (Figs 5, 6).

We will always remember him for his working commitment and dedication to serve the ISP. Undoubtedly, for many plastinators who began their activities under Andreas’ presidency, he was an inspiring example to follow.

On behalf of all the members of the International Society for Plastination.

Rest in peace,

Rafael Latorre, DVM, PhD

President of the International Society for Plastination
